Pinus x russellae is the (theoretical) naturally occurring hybrid of the longleaf pine (Pinus palustris) and the shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata).

The “Russell Pines,” which exhibit both longleaf and shortleaf physical characteristics, are available for study by interested geneticists at the Russell-Fritz Westernmost Longleaf Pine Preserve, located on the Greater Holy Trinity Wilderness Cathedral in San Jacinto County, Texas.

The 131 acre preserve is a remnant of the only documented stand of longleaf pines west of the Trinity River.
